Im from El Salvador. And pupusas is what were most known for especially in Central America. Pupusas  have made its way into the United States and has been embraced by Americans This is an example of Material Culture.





El Salvador is also known for arguably the most dangerous gang in the world. the ms-13. the ms-13 has pretty much taken over the country making it a dangerous place to be. They kidnap Americans and hold them for ransom since they think everyone over here is "rich" a reason why I haven'y visited my country in quite some time. This is an example of non material culture.

El Salvador still has people living in the mountains. Isolated from society. They have a different culture and beliefs. This is an example of subculture.



Although Spanish is the national language there are 4 different languages spoken. 1 is extinct. This is "pipil". Spoken in the remote parts of El Salvador. This is an example of language

     When reading "Sense and Nonsense about surveys" By Howard Shuman I came across a lot of new information I wasn't aware of. The article starts off by saying that learning about ones environment by examining a small part of it as a method to take a survey. It goes on to talk about the infamous story of the literary digest poll prediction. Based on 10 million questionnaires and more than 2 million received it came to the conclusion that Theadore Roosevelt will lose by a landslide in the 1936 presidential election. However , George Gallup used fewer cases but a more effective method and came to the conclusion that Roosevelt will in fact win the presidential election. Gallup chose respondents that represented different economic statuses while literary digest just used names from an automobile ownership list. You would think that since literary digest got more than 2 million questionnaires back that they would know who would win the election but that wasn't the case.

       With that survey Galloped reached fame. In the 1930s and 1940s there was significant improvements in the sampling process and allowed the modern survey to develop and flourish. I found this very interesting because one man revolutionized the art of modern surveys. Surveys could be used to determine anything. For example in the text "Experience Sociology" it talks about Diego Vigil who studied Chicano gangs in 1996. He learned that a prospect of new comer would routinely be attacked and beaten by several gang members at the same time. he referred to this as "street baptism". He claimed it gave the rest of the gang members a sense of the prospects fighting skills and it promoted gang solidarity. From Gallop in 1936 to Vigil in 1996 the same methods are used to conduce research and surveys. As you can see surveys could predict the outcome of an event as important as the presidential election and could be used to conduce research on a petty gang.

My name is Jonathan. I'm 18 years old and a freshman. I'm majoring in Criminal Justice. After I graduate i'll seek employment in that field. I love Basketball even though I suck playing it. My biggest influence in my life is my father. I've seen him work countless hours to provide for my family. Hes the smartest man I know. If I manage to be half the man he is i'll be more than content. My goal in life is to get a good paying job to maintain myself and my family when the time comes. I want to feel like going to school for 17 years was worth it. One historical event that shaped me was 9/11. I was in 2nd grade and I remember everything was chaotic. At a very young age I came to realize that the United States isn't untouchable. People would always say the U.S was the most powerful country but that day proved otherwise. Going to school so close to ground zero really makes me observe myself. And value everything I have. 9/11 definitely shaped me as a person. I never go a day without thanking God for everything I have.
